8 beginner-level tools for startups getting started
This is the list we’re using to power our products.
We’ve tried to include tools unique to the startup world, so if you’re coming from a different domain, you won’t know them.
No Asana or Calendly here. These tools are free or almost free, and you most likely don’t need a developer to use them.
Segment:
Segment is a Customer Data Platform. It took me a few years to figure out why it was helpful, but I finally managed to.
Segment allows you to ‘pour in’ all your customer data from different sources: Website visits, app actions, and back-end operations. Then, you can ‘pour out’ all that data into destinations you’re using to build your product, like:Google Big Query if you need a data warehouse to use for dashboarding.
Marketing Automation if you need to run your campaigns based on tracked events.
Metabase.io: Metabase is an open-source, no-code analytics platform. It’ll allow you to use all the data you’re gathering in Segment and Big query to create reports, internal dashboards, and analytics for yourself and your customers. You can use the open-source version for 30US monthly (Running an AWS Server). If you need help setting it up, check out this Fiverr gig » https://www.fiverr.com/s/Z3Blp4
Marketing Automation platform (Customer.io): It’s email marketing with a twist. Instead of sending your standard newsletter, you’d run email campaigns and in-app customer notifications. You can send targeted messages when customers engage with your app, before they convert to a paid plan if they maxed out their free trial and many other scenarios that can help you with customer acquisition.
Microsoft Clarity: Clarity does something straightforward yet very important: They let you see how people interact with your product. You can see where people click, where they’re scrolling, and how well your copywriting resonates. And it’s completely free forever.
Usetiful: Usetiful is an excellent tool for product onboarding- ensuring your customers run through specific tasks to activate their accounts. You can build onboarding checklists, run in-app notifications based on particular actions, and show different onboarding options for different plan types. They’ve got a startup discount, which brings the monthly price to 15US/month.
Make.com: Use No-code to build your whole product or the occasional complementary workflow. Whether you need to capture leads or update databases, Make allows you to connect platforms so you don’t have to use developers and build integrations.
Google Tag Manager: As Cliché as it may be, so many founders are implementing their external tools script by script instead of using GTM. It’s free, and you can use it to embed any tool into your app or website, create firing triggers based on granular conditions, and control all your front-end integrations from one place.
Chartmogul: The best for revenue reporting. It’ll show you reports that will make your revenue and churn metrics more transparent, connect immediately to your Stripe account, and let you know if you’re hitting your revenue or growth metrics.
Hope you found it useful!
