I had been considering moving to the US for more than a year before I took the step with my first company (Adelante).
But I had a hard time pulling the trigger. And looking back, it was a mistake.
Here are the main blockers I had and why they weren’t true:
#1- Thinking my accent needs to be better:
When you come from abroad, you feel like you need to speak English like the Queen.
The truth is that nobody in the US cares about your accent too much.
As long as you can SPEAK English, people will understand you.
Unlike the UK, the US is an immigrant country- you can hear at least ten different accents in a single street.
#2 - Thinking about the idea for too long:
The whole transformation took me about eight months, but I was thinking about it for at least a year.
I should've done that earlier (and maybe even START in the US). Instead, I spent quite some time working in Israel as a testing ground.
Thinking about an idea only gets you so far - there are some things you just can't 'think through.'
#3- Not getting the right copywriter soon enough:
Compared to the accent, your copy in English needs to be perfect. You can't make a funny grammar mistake.
What might go unnoticed on LinkedIn gets noticed on the landing page for your $10000 product.
You must have the right copywriter to take your written copy from 80% to 100%.
